The back side of each lesson covers the same material, as the first. The first side is done during classtime [often with teacher direction and assistance, if needed] and the second side is for the student to do, on their own at a separate time. Working the same type of problems is part of the reinforcemnet, while the doing it on their own is teachingthem to work independently. This is used throughout 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. By the time a student arrives at Math 4 or Math 54, they should be ready to have the lesson covered [by reading the lesson and a teacher going over the new lesson -- you or DIVE lessons], working the practice problems with monitoring and then doing the problem set on their own. Saxon is using this second half of the lesson to teach working on their own and review and practice of known concepts.

The other poster having their student work "yesterday's" second side is a great idea, as long as the on their own is practiced. [it sounds like it, from her post]

This paperwork [second side] should not be taking, but a few minutes. If it takes longer, or the student needs assistance doing it -- reading directions, explaination or complete step by step covering of the material - then the 'work' is difficult for the student or they need the confidence or experience of doing it on their own. If either of these are the case, re-explain half of the page and have them work that much. Cutting the bites into smaller pieces is fine. If the work is not difficult, but is quite easy, then you might be able to go through a few lessons each day [combining them].

At higher levels, students have taken the tests for a level and found that they knew the material in the first lessons and could go on and learn the remainder of the level, just fine. That is more difficult to do at the lower levels.

I would not wait until night to do this second side. A few minutes after lunch or a different subject. Doing it at a separate time helps reinforce what they have learned. Similar to how many teach very young children to play musical instruments -- a few minutes at a time a couple of times a day. See if that helps.
