I am getting ready to try this! My 7 yo daughter is struggling greatly with learning to read. We have used Reading Made Easy, parts of Sonlight's LA curriculum, and some phonics/reading sites online (she is very auditory/kinesthetic). She already knows the sounds each letter makes and is pretty sure of the short vowel sounds, but when she starts blending letters together, apart from CVC words with "a", it is painful! She also reverses many letters, much like my oldest son did. I considered purchasing an entire new program like Scaredy Cat Reading but decided to give Explode the Code a try first. My boys loved these books (part of Sonlight's LA curriculum), and I have read reviews by people who used them as a stand-alone curriculum to teach their kids to read. I just purchased the teacher's guide for books 1 and 2, along with the workbooks. I know there are also flash cards that can be used with the curriculum. I don't know yet if I will need them. I plan on using this along with www.starfall.com, a FREE phonics internet site. My daughter loves it, and it gives her the auditory component she needs so much. We'll give this a try and see what happens. She is so close to getting it that I'm hopeful this will push her over the hump!

HTH!
Blessings,
Heather
