I so appreciate the no judgement about a 10 yo in 3rd grade....:) There are reasons, but no need to bog the facts with those......

What is most confusing is that he began school mid semester 1st grade at 8yo only knowing his alphabet and not any addition etc. I was promised that addition and subtraction would be used and reviewed that semester and re-inforced during 2nd grade.

Well, end of 2nd grade they had only just begun to *learn* subtraction of single digits......

Fast forward to where we live now (we moved 3 times in less than 2 years and dealt with some serious illness and injuries and he was not taught what I should have taught him at a young age at home...sorry, wasn't going to *bog* huh??LOL)

Entering 3rd grade here the students learned multiplication in 2nd grade. *sigh* They had already covered simple geometry such as vertices, angles etc in 2nd grade and our son had not heard or seen terms as these.

Those are a couple of examples to say that I know I can bring him up to speed on these but need advice on how to do this. Should I USE a 4th grade text (if I bring him home now rather than in the fall) and just drill drill etc on the facts? Will he miss A LOT of basic math if he skips a 3rd grade *text*? I want to get him into his age/grade level asap :o)

They are not using textbooks in 3rd here...just computer printed pages. Also, most of the story problems are 3-4 step with multiplication and subtraction in them and a lot of logic such as '3 boys, different first name letters, 3 dogs match the dog with owner' yada type and he gets lost with them.

I feel so pulled to just bring him home now and begin drills etc so these problems are not so daunting KWIM?

I sincerely apologize for the long ramble...was not my original intention. I was so happy to see a reply that I spilled it all in response LOL.

Thank you, and any opinions will be wonderful.

BTW, I taught my older 2 children (8 years ago!) and happen to have BJU Math 5, 6 and 7 here at home, but the TM's are intensive and difficult to read (small print)etc. So I would love to find something that is more parent/user friendly.

Would you say Saxon is that?

Again, thank you!
Lynn
