Hi, I tried using the Explode the Code books....but for us they did not work well enough. In case you do try these and feel the same...what worked wonders is Spalding...Writing Road to Reading 5th edition. The phonogram cards really changed the way our son *saw* words and put the spelling together with the sounds. OK, it is work (and I learned A LOT as well, and wish I had known 1/2 of what I picked up using this program!lol) Just something to check into and I remember when our son once simply said 'well, that c says the s sound cuz c before e i or y says c, any other letter says k sound LOL. That was a lot to say that most of the rules are easy for kids to get b/c they suddenly know the reason for the sounds. I had not found a program that did that so well until Spalding. Warning though...The other programs were considerably more simple to use and less time intensive.........the actual lessons are easy, but it takes time to learn how to teach it. Just learning the phonograms was enough to make a HUGE difference, however. Lynn
