I have used both. My daughter used Scott Foresman both in school and at home, through about the 7th grade. We attempted to switch to Saxon's Algebra 1/2 (she was really great at math, always a year or so ahead of grade level) and it was a disaster. Saxon has worked well for other children, but it was not a good match for her--it presents concepts in pieces, so it is very difficult to build a cognitive picture that explains a concept. The recursive form of review is great for some students, but again, if your student wants or needs to see a complete explanation of how exponents work, Saxon will be frustrating. We ended up using Algebra: Structure and Method Book 1 by Brown and Dolciani for Algebra. It has a very "deep" coverage of algebra, covering territory that some curricula consider Algebra II, and continued on in that same series for Geometry: Structure and Method and Algebra and Trigonometry: Structure and Method. If she (and you) aren't math whizzes, then I would probably switch to Teaching Textbooks for pre-algebra and algebra after the Scott Foresman.
