Subject:         Can you please help me know if I did anything wrong here, and if so, help me know what I could do better in the future?

Hi... I'm hoping for insights here! I've a situation where a woman wanted to buy two civics books from me but I had to inform her that they were already spoken for by someone else. I told the woman that I'd get back to her if the sell happened to fall through, and she said fine. The sell did fall through, and so I wrote stating the books were hers if she still wanted them and to please let me know. I waited 2 days for a reply and didn't see one, assumed she no longer wanted them, and sold the civics books to someone else just last night.

I also had other items for sell and advertized about them yesterday, and received a response from her saying she wanted some of these other books too, and would I combine them with the first two she wanted. She said she had written me twice saying that she wants the civics book, but that I had not responded.

I don't know much about spam filters, but someone suggested I check it on my puter because the settings might be set too high. I had my dh check it a little while ago... I was quite ignorant about how to go about it myself, and he had to show me!... and you guessed it... the spam filter must have thought her two messages (informing me that she wanted the civics books) were spam and thrown the messages in my delete box. (How do spam filters work?... Does it have to do with her email address or is it the content of her message? I don't understand why some of her messages would reach my inbox, but others don't. Can someone enlighten me, please?)

Anyway, because I sold the civics books she does not want to buy anything from me unless I tell the other lady I had made a mistake and can't sell them to her after all. That's fine with me, because I can easily sell elsewhere, but I hate the feeling that I've let her down.

I know this is getting long, but here is the letter I wrote back to her. Can you tell me if I went about this the right way, or what I should have done differently? It would be much appreciate...

hugs,
Laura

Debbie, I'm sorry you are disappointed, and I can most certainly understand why. I'd written saying that the books were available and asked you to let me know if you cared for them, and you responded twice saying that you did. You were very patient with me when I didn't respond, and I thank you for that.

On the other hand, Debbie, I'm sure if you read further you will be able to see and understand what position I was in. When I did not see any emails from you for two days... (and, btw, dh did some fiddling and found they had been deleted because the filter system was thinking they were spam... he has now lowered the setting on our spam filter because of this...), I simply believed that you had changed your mind. When it comes to buying and selling online, usually if a person does not respond in 24 hours it is assumed they no longer desire the item. I waited 2 days before I sold the books, trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, thinking that life was maybe just extra busy for you or something. I in no way meant to be rude or anything, and sincerely apologize if it came across as such.

But you're right. You did respond twice (even though my system rejected them), and you had no way of knowing the cause; nor did I have any way of knowing you were trying to get in touch with me. That being the case, the sell was made to someone else. I hope you are able to get a hold of books which meet your needs. I did see both of the civic books at ________ for very cheap, in case you want to give that a try. I will also keep my eyes open on the boards/lists to see if I see them there, and will pass the info on to you when I do.

I'm sorry things turned out like this, and wish you well in your
homeschooling endeavors. Have a most happy Mother's Day weekend.

hugs,
Laura
