Hey Katie!

CONGRATS on your decision to homeschool! You and your husband will very quickly realize the "ripple effect" your decision will have on your entire family! Once your family comes together in every aspect -- kiddos not being shuffled off to spend the majority of their day with people other than the parents and family God gave them -- you'll see a MASSIVE change in their hearts! It's exciting to watch :)

We're in our 7th year homeschooling. We, too, started out with ABEKA. The main reason we chose ABEKA was because it's what we accustomed to -- it's set up more for a traditional schooling environment like what children receive in a classroom setting. Over the last 2 years, we've made some changes, though. You'll see as time progresses your children's learning styles and maturity levels will go through changes. It's important to keep your eyes on the Lord during these stages. No "one" curriculum fits every child, or every parent!

There is a WEALTH of information out there! One recommendation I would make before you start curriculum shopping is Terri Maxwell's book "Managers of their Schools." I was one of those homeschooling moms who kept my entire focus on the academics when we started. There is so much more opportunity given to us as moms when we have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to spend with our children! Academics is VITAL to them fulfilling the plans God has for their lives, but there are so many other things involved in homeschooling. Terri Maxwell sheds alot of insight into keeping a balance in every aspect of the home while striving toward excellence in academics.

The other suggestion I'd give is to check out There are several links on the home page for new homeschoolers. You can also click on your state and receive information pertinent to your individual state (regulations, homeschool groups, etc).

Best wishes on your endeavor! You're gonna LOVE it :)
