The doctors I knew as a child did go to medical school (and did not make house calls), and they did not charge exorbitant rates. Some of them did sometimes accept payment in goods or services instead of cash. My mom gave birth to my youngest brother in the '70s -- not the '50s. Did you read what her doctor and hospital bills cost? It is true that medicine has advanced since then. But I am not convinced that is the sole reason for the huge increase in medical costs.
