I thought that it was great because he acknowledged the strengths and positive points of all and also was not shy to bring up the mistakes made by all as well. He made a distinction between radicals/extremists and those who want to live in peace and abide by the law -- on all sides. After he discussed the misconceptions we may have about most Muslims, he asked them to consider the misconceptions they may have about us. I liked his "these are facts, not opinions" when speaking about 9/11. He called Iraq a war "of choice" which is the truth but he also said in no uncertain terms that Afghanistan was not. I think his view is the only way a peaceful end to the Israel/Palestinian conflict might be seen. And, speaking of women's rights over there? Yeah, howdie! You go, Obama!
Here's something I haven't googled yet but don't know what it means. Do you? "In US, rules on charitable giving has made it harder for Muslims to fulfill religious obligations (zakat)."
"Freedom in America is indivisible from the freedom to practice one's religion." Greatest quote!!
I think he tried to pull together all of the innocents of the world so that we can and should ban together against the extremists. This is shown in the recent story about torture, actually. I forget his name but googling torture sugar-free cookies should find it. One of the worst terrorists hated the US because of the stereotypes he had been taught. When the interrogators talked to him and brought him s/f cookies because he's diabetic, he saw us as humans and gave up his information. Talking to those who work in the prison system will also show that this is what's right. They have to be treated human -- even if what they did was horrendous. First of all, we don't want our captured personnel to be tortured. And, secondly, it (humane treatment) gives the better intel.
I am astonished by some people I personally know who say this speech "proves" he's a secret Muslim because he used the word "Holy" when speaking to them about the Koran. He said outright that he's a Christian but showed them respect. Why is that wrong? My previous preacher visited every different faith or belief that he could so they could talk & discuss. Isn't that what we are told to do? Yes.
Then Rep. Inhofe says Obama is "Unamerican" --- sheesh, can someone please come up with something new? That's getting mighty old. Hey, Inhofe, YOU'RE Unamerican! And, unpatriotic and unChristian too! And, not to mention, an idiot. But, I digress......
What are your thoughts on the speech linked below? I'm proud of it and think it's the Most American way!! We *are not* a country of bullies and I'm proud of that! We're also a Melting Pot and I'm proud of that as well.
