I try hard but it is VERY difficult because we are importing so much. The Dollar Gen store is wallpapered with recall sheets. I've never seen so many in my life. I remember hearing a few years ago the increase in textiles being imported - it was unreal. Our empty factories are depressing. Marketplace (NPR) had a story on this last night. I just caught the tail end of it, so am not sure of the whole gist, but at least in some provinces, the Chinese government is beginning to treat their workers better. Marketplace discussed the end of deflationary goods as the whole world pays for the increased Chinese wages, but in my mind, this is a good and necessary thing even taking in to account that it will hurt some lower income people here The Nat'l Geo story is a good one. It tells of workers who have more in China but it also shows the results of that since they don't follow economic or ergonomic issues that we, as a country, feel are necessary - unless they are done out of our sight. It's like buying ground beef (sorry, Veg) without thinking about how it got into that grocery store. China is a communist government who only allows outsiders into general areas of their land. The outside areas close to the waters are generally open and outsiders are welcome - of course, those workers are going to be treated more fairly than those who are more inland and out of sight. Again, it it their government and military forces who actually benefit from our $$$ - and we help enforce their one-child law indirectly. --- I erased a sentence here that would have to go to the Flame Room on the issue - not inflammatory, but discussion of that enforcement and our involvement in it.--- So far, they've poisoned our animals and even some human food has been tainted. Our kids' toys are recalled because of lead paint and issues that would never have come into the country if inspected as it entered the country as it should have been. Our wages are stagnant and empty buildings are prevalent. The cheaper products haven't helped us. In fact, if we had put the money into new technology HERE rather than THERE, I think we would be very competitive with the costs and especially the quality of our own products but instead we have run ourselves out of work. I just simply don't believe that the Chinese people who are not seen are living an improved life - especially those in the "cancer villages."
