That said, I did read that those planting a garden this year is up to 39% from 32% just a year ago. My sister in Seattle just rented out the side beds at her place to some ladies to garden.
We have strawberries, lettuce and potatos in the ground and another bed to plant with veggies once danger of frost has passed (IF danger of frost ever passes in this God forsaken land).
We also joined a CSA down the road at a half share for organic veggies and fruit and local honey and eggs. It's pricey, though, so I don't know how those on limited income can make a switch to healthier organic stuff other than growing it themselves. We chose the "work" option of 10 hours to reduce our CSA share cost a bit. I know when our money was quite tight, buying organic really wasn't an option.
I am limiting the kids to one glass of milk per meal and making them do refills of water only.
