The connection between very conservative beliefs, the need to control and massive insecurity is well-established in psych/soc circles. The only thing newish is how the fear level has been artificially heightened since 9/11, putting a lot of people who unlike Holly otherwise wouldn't be in this group smack in the middle of it.
