Noble as this sounds, and I won't discount it but will qualify.

First - extravagantly might be changed to generous but not to the point of putting one in financial discord. I think that is what you were aiming at?

Second - to give is sometimes not in the form of money, clothes, stuff or even time. Sometimes it is in the form of voting for certain policies that may benefit those less fortunate and not those who are wealthy. Why? Because it's what is called giving a wo/man an opportunity to succeed against the odds. It was also a conservative, pre-Reagan trickle down economy, patriotic, WW2 value -- "spread the wealth". Although you and I know, it was a fight to keep this value in practice, it nonetheless was a capitalist goal; now lost to greed.
