I had changed my ind on McCain because of his buckling under the sordid tactics that the GOP is embarking on. I was so hoping he wouldn't do that and I think he has changed, in a way. Perhaps the pressure is too great for him and that is a grievous condition for a potential President.
Huckabee, however, has pleasantly surprised me with his comment on Wright. It was the right thing to do. So, I know I have posted it before, but I will do so again.
"As easy as it is for those of us who are white to look back and say 'That's a terrible statement!' ... I grew up in a very segregated South. And I think that you have to cut some slack -- and I'm gonna be probably the only conservative in America who's gonna say something like this, but I'm just tellin' you -- we've gotta cut some slack to people who grew up being called names..."
Have the conservatives played this tape over and over and over again on the news? No, but they played Wrights extemporaneous statements over and over.
I haven't missed Huckabee's exhortation on expecting both sides of the aisle to be fair. He sited Falwell's extreme statements as fodder when he thought it should have been handled more judiciously. I agree. YET - Falwell, had opportunities to qualify and was given respect. I'm not convinced that Wright is given that same level of honor.
