but I think I've found it, although I'm not sure because I still haven't found the release or transcript or whatever they got the quotes from.
Anyway, NUT wants all totally secular, totally integrated schools. But the people strongly prefer the option of faith schools (some sources say because the faith schools provide better educations). NUT hopes that if they can weaken the link between faith and schools, that people will not so strongly support the faith schools and then NUT will be able to convince the politians to do away with the faith schools.
Evidently, NUT thinks if they put preachers in the secular schools, and Imans in the Christian schools that people will not see any difference between the kinds of schools and the link will be weakened. I expect this is going to look like a race thing, and it probably is to some degree, but I don't think it is the only factor. Schools, like the faith schools, that teach only people already fluent in the language have an obvious academic advantage over schools that have to teach ESL as well as the curriculum.
The Church of England doesn't like it because the faith schools are often in their churches and they don't like the idea of Imans coming into their churches to teach Islam. (Actually, that is speculation. I couldn't find anything that elaborated on why they didn't like it. But I did find some stats on the CofE website about their faith schools). It could be that they want to teach religion themselves instead of having a preacher picked by NUT, and if it was the US, I'd think that was a strong reason. But Christianity in England is almost dead and since so many of the schools are faith schools and a quarter of the faith schools are CofE, I don't think they are teaching much of anything).
