website. The news stories say that was publicized yesterday and evidently they are slow about updating their website. But the quotes in the op were quotes of the NUT representative not the news article. Maybe NUT will update their site and we can get the statements in context.
But I found lots of info on their plans and goals as far as faith based schools. NUT doesn't like choice in schools, because then the children don't have to embrace diversity. There is pages on it. Religious is not the only diversity they want every child to embrace... they are also want all children to be fully integrated in terms of racial, language, gender, gender orientation, income, even academics (in Britain, "academy" is not just an alternative name for a school... to be an "academy" the school must meet strict higher academic standards or some such thing...NUT is against that too).
Here is a small section from their 2008 conference that sums up several of their points, this particular section is on religion...
"Faith Schools
MOTION 26
Conference notes the current use of the euphemism ‘faith schools’ to describe religiously
controlled schools.
Conference believes that the long term aim of the Union should be the establishment of a
single, secular comprehensive state education system.
Conference further believes that, whilst religious studies and philosophy should be an integral
part of the entitlement curriculum for all pupils, religious groups, of whatever faith, should have
no place in the control and management of schools.
Conference believes that diversity is an asset and that all children should have the opportunity
to meet and work with children from a variety of backgrounds and faiths within their day to day
education.
Conference asserts that education segregated on the basis of faith, ethnicity or social class
undermines community cohesion. Conference favours diversity within schools rather than the
promotion of diversity between schools.
Conference instructs the Executive to:
1. Publicise the Union’s stance on cultural diversity stressing our belief that all groups in
society should be treated equally within the education system;
2. Campaign actively against the opening of any future schools that are controlled or
sponsored by religious organisations;
3. Widen the remit of the Faith School Working Party to include the drawing up of proposals
for the integration of all voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools, together with
any other religiously controlled or sponsered state schools, into a publically funded, secular education system.
I keep getting the address wrong in the links, so if you want to read it yourself, searchengine "Nation Union of Teachers"
