Or we must be diligent. I've seen some people just bring their own plastic bags. So the $$ invested in recycling doesn't have to be prohibitive.
I did spend a few dollars on recycling bins at our house, and they are plastic. How ironic there?
But what can we get that isn't plastic?
Case in point. We needed to remodel this old house we are living in and replaced the kitchen pipes. The pipes were metal. Now they are plastic which didn't make me very happy. sigh.
Making plastic doesn't have to be made from nonrenewable resources. I hope sustainable polymers becomes a mandate & the future very soon.
Imperial College London-- "The 'plastic age' dominates to such on extent that it is hard to consider life without them; their manufacture is o growth industry with worldwide production exceeding 150 million tons per year. However, the most common feedstocks used to make them are fossil fuels with around 7% of worldwide oil and gas being consumed in plastics production. Such resources, although technically renewable, are estimated to be depleted in the next hundred years. The disposal of waste plastics also poses problems as the majority (>90%) go into landfill sites where they are bulky and pervasive. There is on urgent need, and considerable economic, legislative and consumer pressure to develop sustainable ways to make useful plastic materials that cah addresses these important challenges in two complimentary research areas: (1) the use of carbon dioxide to make polycarbonates and (2) the use of lactic acid to make polyesters......"
