Subject:         John Taylor Gatto & Dr. Thomas Armstrong NYC Feb 4-5
Date: January 30, 2006 at 4:50 pm PST

Hi all! So excited to get to meet these two giants at our NYCHEA meeting - the nice thing is that they have opened it up to outsiders as well -- I have posted the details -- if anyone does decide to join us!

It is $30.00 contribution for non-members for the whole weekend series

Free to all NYCHEA members!

NYCHEA [New York City Home Educators Alliance] have invited two nationally and internationally known authors and speakers to address ways that can help strengthen and facilitate your child's learning and deepen your
understanding of their intelligences.

Sat. 9:30 to 12:30

Although best known for his sharp critique of the public educational system, in this talk he will focus on how he was able to inspire and empower his students.

John Taylor Gatto taught in the New York City public school system for 30 years and was named teacher of the year three times. His book "Dumbing us Down" is a recommended must read on most homeschooling book lists.
His most recent book is "The Underground History of American Education".

Saturday 1:30 to 5:30

Dr. Armstrong's work is grounded in Gardner's theories of multiple intelligences. His gift is his ability to present information in a lively, memorable, and user-friendly way. Dr. Armstrong draws on over thirty years of teaching experience at all levels of education. He has authored
11 books which have been translated into 21 languages. Some titles are: "Awakening Your Child's Natural Genius", "Multiple Intelligences, Discovering the
Giftedness in All" and "The Radiant Child".

Eight Kinds of Smart: Using Multiple Intelligences in Homeschooling

This presentation shows how Howard Gardner¹s theory of multiple intelligences (MI theory) can provide a powerful approach through which the abilities of children can be highlighted and worked with to engage their interest, tap their potentials, and assist them in learning new things. The presentation includes interactive experiences of the eight intelligences; a lecture linking MI theory to brain research, developmental psychology, and the study of symbol systems; a look at how to assess a child¹s
multiple intelligences; a hands-on demonstration of a science concept using all eight intelligences, and a practical lesson planning approach that homeschooling parents can use to tailor instructional strategies
linked to specific academic outcomes. Dr. Armstrong will demonstrate this approach by using examples from literature and math, and then invite participants to
create their own strategies using the MI approach.

SUNDAY 10:00 to 12:00

Awakening the Genius in Every Child: Discovering and Reviving the Natural Motivation that Exists in All Children at Birth through Homeschooling

Through slides, lecture, and experiences, Dr. Armstrong explains how each child is born into this world as a natural genius (the root meaning of "genius" is "to be born"). He explores the twelve qualities of the natural
genius of children (including creativity, vitality, flexibility, curiosity, and playfulness), explores the neurological, developmental, and behavioral foundations of genius in kids, describes how that genius shuts down
through influences in the home ("home-miliation"), the school ("dysteachia") (even in some homeschooling programs), and the broader culture ("media-ocrity"),
and finally, provides practical strategies that homeschooling parents can use to help reawaken the original genius in their children. Dr. Armstrong will also share information about the spiritual nature of the child
from his forthcoming book Journey of a Lifetime: The Remarkable Story of Human Development from Prebirth to Death (Sterling Publishing Co., Fall 2006)
