Hi, I got my 10 year old daughter a Brother 2600i sewing machine for Christmas. She was taking a 4-H sewing class. It was reasonable ($80) and has a 5 year warranty I think. It has about 26 basic stitches and the feet for button holes. The sewing teacher thought it would work well for her. (It doesn't have embroidery and some of the fancy stitches, but she said you don't use those very often anyway.) You could also search Top 10 sewing machines and see what others recommend.
