Saxon is designed to use Algebra 1/2 before Algebra 1. (87 is mostly review (there is some new pre-algebra material near the end) and can be skipped if the student does well in 76.) There is a placement test here: http://www.learningthings.com/articles/saxon-math-placement-test.aspx, but I don't know of it corresponds to the old Saxon or the new Saxon. (Hate that they didn't change the name when the completely changed the curriculum and method!)
