In Reply to: Is it possible to combine my 3rd and 6th grade boys for Writing & Grammar? posted by Homeschool Mom of 3 on April 28, 2008 at 5:16 pm:
at least in part. My boys were about that age or maybe 4th and 7th, can't remember exactly. We used Winston Grammar since we liked the "hands-on" feel of the materials. Each boy had their own set of cards and workbook. I would go over the lesson and then they would race to see who could "build" (lay out the cards) their sentences and mark them on their worksheets first. My younger son was only required to identify (with cards)and mark (on worksheets)parts of speech that had been covered thus far. My older son however, was required to identify and mark ALL the parts of speech (since he was more familiar with them). This made for a more fair race and the boys had a blast! Definitely one of our favorite programs!
They also enjoyed Mad Libs for fun ;-)
For a time, we did some journal writing. I would set the timer for a specific amount of time (start with 5 minutes, then work up to 10)and they would just write anything they wanted for that time. I didn't correct the journals - I just wanted them to learn to enjoy writing. For actual instruction, their favorite materials were Wordsmith and Wordsmith Apprentice.
