So far we have used Calvert 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5th grade math . We use it through a cyberschool so I've had no choice there.
All I can say is YUCK !!!! with a capital Yuck . My 10 year old is threatening to burn her book this year and my 8yr old just cries and cries .
It is so poorly put together . Anything is better then this math program , Saxon , Singapore , Bob Jones , Christian Light . Those are all MUCH better then Calvert math .
What don't I like about it ?
1. The teacher manuals are WORTHLESS and full of errors .
2. The textbooks are too busy , too much crammed on to one page .
3. Not enough fact practice . It moves WAY too fast with certain topics that should be practiced more on ( addition , subtraction , multiplication , division ) . There is NO drill whatsoever . If you want it you better remember to supplement with it .
4. It shows your child more then one way to solve a math problem. Which is fine if you have a child that is good with math. Not so good if you have a child that has difficulty with math . Then in the end of it they will say " Oh yea , you can do it this way too ." meaning the way you and I were taught math . My 8yr old's head is just about to explode .
5. It will bring up a concept and leave it to never come back up again . Such as Roman numerals . It doesnot teach this . You may find it on one page each year in a book . It means nothing . Or in the 1st grade it brought up the concept of cusienaire rods . Once and you never see it again . Completely pointless especially if your a new homeschooler and have not a clue what they are in the first place .
After teaching it for this long I have come to the conclusion that next year we will NOT be using it anymore . Blah!!!
