If she is taking high school math, most texts are now written to help students use at least a TI-84 graphing calculator. It's not cheap, but you won't need to replace it later if she goes on with math.
We learned the hard way. To save money I got a "lesser" calculator because it was cheaper -- it was still not *cheap*, but it was less expensive than the TI-84. But it turned out that it was designed differently than the TI-84, and as a result he couldn't do the calculations with it the other students could do with theirs.
So you might look at the math your dd is going to take, check out the textbook or other teaching materials and see what is recommended. From our own sad experience, I'd say buy what is recommended so you don't end up buying a calculator twice.
