By wanting something similar to Teaching Textbooks, I am thinking self-teachable.

The one that leapt to mind was Easy Grammar, which was our favorite. If you don't know it at all, it covers parts of speech in an easy-to-understand way, and helps with appositives, parallel construction, etc.

I think it's the clearest workbook out there. If you went this route, you would buy only one workbook (per kid). They are labeled 3/4, 4/5, 5/6 -- which is silly -- those are grade ranges, I think. Truthfully, the books all do exactly the same thing, and there is no reason to ever do it more than one year in a row. You could do one workbook in a semester and be done with it.

Done right, it should help your SAT and ACT scores a lot. The best part about the books is their suggestion that you learn all the prepositions and then cross out all prepositional phrases to find the "meat" of the sentence. This helps with the extraordinarily long and convoluted sentences they might find in high school texts or the ACT/SAT tests.

I'm torn between recommending 4/5 or an "older" one. I don't have it in front of me, but I liked 4/5 -- it seemed to do everything it needed to do, and the information was solid, useful, and done. Quick and easy.
