Every high schooler needs a civics/gov't./law course just to understand how things work in our society. It tends to be an easier sell to kids because of its immediate relevance. How about a history of the middle east/Asia, either this year or next? the fact is, society is changing and we need to know more about the history of the East. If he's a techie, he's going to be working with a LOT of Asians. It might be good to be up on those cultures.
