We're in the same boat as you... floating up chemistry creek without a paddle. Here is what we are considering:
Engineering - structural, architectural, etc. study structure, forces, design, build models, etc.
Health - Total Health (?) is an intense course that takes at least a year to complete
Automotive - check out AutoUpkeep
and my favorite...
Applied Science using Boy Scout Merit Badges - boys have to do research, usually interview someone in the field, and do projects.
Options are: Automotive, Astronomy, Aviation, Plant Science, Nuclear Science, Medicine, Engineering, CHEMISTRY (!) Energy, Weather... and
many more! Books can be borrowed from many libraries, scout friends, or begged for on freecycle. And if not, they are about $4-6 bucks at the local scout store or from scoutstuff.org.
My son is a scout anyway so thought we do a bunch this year and kill two birds with one stone... so to speak. But no reason non-scouts can't use them too!
Good Luck!
