I started my homeschool venture some 9 years ago with a dd about that age, maybe a year older.

There are lots of choices, so this is just one person's style.

1. Math - I like Math Relief for algebra. In fact, I love it! There are video samples on his website.

2. Science - Apologia is popular with Christian homeschoolers. I tried SOS and wasn't happy with the quality. I've also used lost of other things to try to draw my high schoolers into science, but it depends on what you want to study. Biology is common in 9th, and so is "physical" or "conceptual physics."

3. History/Social Studies -- Like math, I love the program we use, which is My Father's World. I've used it with my youngest for years. I did use lots of other things with my older dd, but again that will depend on what you want to study this year. Common 9th grade subjects are world history, American history, ancient history, or sometimes geography.

4. English -- I will also use My Father's World for this in high school this time around (my youngest is heading into 9th grade). Other popular homeschool English programs are Lightning Literature, Learning Language Arts Through Literature, Michael Clay Thompson, and I could go on. I think if it's your first year homeschooling, you should spend some time figuring out what your student's weaknesses are and what she has mastered (and you don't need to spend time on). That will help English not get so huge.

5. Bible is a subject for many of us Christian homeschoolers. Again, I use MFW.

6. Foreign language is usually started in 9th. I caution you that most standard textbooks are difficult to use because by year 2, the teacher materials are written in the foreign language! If you decide to do a language, then you might post for ideas on that particular language.

Does that help?
Julie
