Hi Robbin,
We're using MFW for 9th grade. I'm very excited at how well it's all planned out for me. It does most of the things I was trying to do on my own with older dd (read entire Bible, Homeschool in the Woods timeline, real literature but also pulling it together with a "history" book, etc), but I will have so much less work planning it all out.

As for the writing, I have my manual and it looks very well planned out. You spend the first week more involved with helping them follow the steps in the manual for writing a simple argumentative essay, so they will have the idea when they get to actual topics. Grading seems to be pretty clear, too.
