We plan on having our son attend a local college so that he can live at home rather than on campus. He will have to drive 50 miles each way, in order to attend his first choice college, but that is preferable to having him live in the dorms.
Each year as he has gotten older, we have allowed him more freedom, but it always came with more responsibility. He does his own laundry, cleans his own room, and prepares his meals if he wants something different than what I fix. He also helps with some other household chores, since he is part of the family and everyone pitches in.
He has very different views on sexual morality than we do, but he knows that while he lives in our house and we are paying for his college and other expenses, that he has to abide by our rules. If he breaks the rules, that is an indication that he is an adult and therefore will move out, get a job, and pay all of his own expenses.
We figure it is best for him to be exposed to worldly things while he is still living at home so that we can have an influence on his decisions. He feels very comfortable talking to us about all issues, even those we disagree on. Keeping communication lines open is the key.
Hope this helps,
Sue
