In Reply to: Does anyone know if Rosetta Stone counts as an actual school credit class? posted by Imelda on August 19, 2008 at 12:51 pm:
The only thing that really counts as "actual school credit" is attending a class in an accreditted school with a certified teacher. Setting that foo foo aside I'm in agreement with Patti. Level one = two high school years. I've used Rosetta Stone for a number of years and the only suggestion I might have to level the playing field would be to add a verb conjugation workbook, such as Practice Makes Perfect. Practice Makes Perfect also has two other workbooks dealing with grammar. Barrons has one - there are several. Oh and reading spanish from a spanish reader; using World Books translator to read any one of their articles; or any of the numerous stories written in spanish. RS's style is to approach foreign language the way we learned English. That said we learned much from listening to others read to us and us reading to them, so maybe audio spanish books or movies subtitled in spanish. "Mist; The Tale of a Sheepdog Puppy" has automatic subtitles that are slow enough to read in spanish, but spoken in english. Also in an "actual" class they also touch on cultural topics of a particular language. So, add a verb workbook; read stories in spanish; and touch on cultural topics related to spanish speaking countries and that would create a very complete course.
