If he is thinking at all about engineering, I think calculus is a much better choice. Talking to the advisor again sounds like a good idea.

But if you sense the advisor is not up to speed on engineering or other careers/majors, you might look at some college websites for the prerequisites or course recommendations for preparing for that major. You could also make a couple phone calls to engineering departments and ask about stats vs calculus in a high school math sequence in preparation for college.

And yes, your ds could pick up calc later, but sometimes it's harder to jump back in than to move sequentially from algebra to trig (precalc) to calc. One of my dc is an engineering major and did the entire math sequence through 2 years of calculus before graduating high school. Even so, calculus and physics related courseowrk was about all he did last year in college. This fall he's taking dynamics, thermodynamics, circuits, and courses like that. I'm sure statistics is useful but it may not be immediately practical for getting a foundation for engineering. It is because of my engineering son's experience and recommendation that my youngest is taking a second year of calculus for his senior year of high school.
