Actually, stats is a great choice. If your son is going on in a hard science, like engineering, he will indeed need calculus, but the taste of vector algebra and probability theory he'll get in stats will still stand him in good stead. And if he goes into a social science or non-tech field, he should definitely take stats. Econ, psych, business, marketing - all those fields require fluency in basic statistics. Be at ease. He's in good shape. If he decides to be a physicist and wants calc later, he'll be easily able to get it later.
