Usually, AP chem is done after a year of introductory chemistry. If your student does not already have a basic chemistry course under his belt he might be lost in AP. I had a son who (after a little work here at home) did a year of basic chem at a traditional school with a very poor teacher. When he went to AP chem he had an excellent teacher but he still felt lost. He only got a 3 on the AP exam (usually got 5's on his APs) and felt he had been "robbed" by having the poor teacher for basic chem, which was the foundation course.

I used Apologia chem with another son and I will not recommend it. Following the course, ds took the chemistry SAT II; and apologia did not prepare him for that. We used a prep book and ds had to learn a lot of concepts on the fly before the exam because they were not covered in Apologia.
