We had the same trouble with Apologia (we used Phys Sci, Gen Sci, and Chemistry). Like you, I also felt like I was the only one with this opinion of Apologia. It is good in its own right, but not the style we prefer.

I took dd17 to an Abeka motel display and she loved the look of Abeka's biology text, so I opted to get that for her. The lab videos are spendy, but I managed to find one used. We LOVE those lab videos! She is ADD and needs user friendly yet engaging text and illustrations.

My ds22 used Apologia Chemistry. I told him if he completed 1/2 of it I'd find him a meteorology textbook for the last 1/2 of that year. Again, I bought Apologia chemistry because so many loved it. He is a meteorology major.

Dd17 is using a Holt Chemistry text she found at a local curriculum sale. It was very affordable, so I bought it thinking we could get something out of it. Then I ordered Friendly Chemistry and quickly figured out we are too impatient to figure out the rules of the games to learn from them lol - our flaw. So, I set that aside to sell someday. In the meantime my prayers were answered when I found a used Abeka Chemistry lab dvd locally at a great price. Did I mention I love their lab videos? lol.

IMO boredom can kill future interest in a subject. If your son is bored I'd consider seeking out an alternative he might enjoy better. Thank You for mentioning Biology 101 it looks interesting.
