Dear Ladies
May the love of our Lord be with you and those whom you love.
I am writing to you with a slightly curious request: I notice that
several of the garments that you prepare carry colonial sleeves. I
would like to find out about the history of “colonial sleeves”. Why
are the called that, and when and where did they first come into
fashion?
I have tried to find out on the Internet, but even “google” has failed
to help.
The reason is the following: We have a very old painting of Our
Lady of Altagracia here in the Dominican Republic. It was probably
painted between 1510 and 1515 en Seville, Spain. Through the
years it has been “retouched” several times. It appears that one of
these additions was a pair of what seem to be colonial sleeves.
Now then, if we could find out when “colonial sleeves” were first
used, it would give us an idea of the earliest date for the addition
of the sleeves to the painting.
I understand that you are not fashion historians, but I hope that
you might be able to pass this E mail on to some one who could
help.
Thank you for any help you might be able to offer me
May God bless you
John
