This is a 447-pg art book published in 1999 to depict an immensely important exhibition of early German master drawings that were on view from Oct. 24, 1999 to Jan. 9, 2000, first in Berlin then at the National Gallery in Washington DC. Among the twenty-five artists whose works are stunningly reproduced by the publisher Hatje Cantz and descriptively analysed in text entries which verge on monographs by seven German art historians, are Albrecht Durer, Matthias Grunewald, Hans Holbein (both Elder and Younger), Lucas Cranach, Albert Altdorfer, Hans Baldung, and both Ludwig and Martin Schongauer. In addition are essays on the Basel and Berlin collections that provided the exhibition's drawings, a historical outline of master drawings from the German Renaissance, and an exhaustive 14-page bibliography. 447 pages with 273 illustrations, 182 in color
