Hi, I would try to encourage you to not give in to let her use a calculator (yet). Maybe in the future, but I would stall it right now. I would also consider trying a personal sized white board.I don't know why it works, but it does. Both m kids love to do their math on their white boards. I have a girl and a boy, and they are 3 years apart, but they both like doing the problems on their white board, and then copying the answer on their page. I have tried to ask them why this works, but I think it's different for each of them. My son (8th gr) likes to use it bc he says it doesn't feel crowded like paper does. My daughter (5th) likes it, and I wonder if it is bc she likes to doodle. Either way, they are getting it learned and done. They like me to explain and demo problems on their white board, and then help them to do them on there as well. I have also used construction paper cut outs and I have also used notecards with numbers on them, to use when converting the metric system. It works. She can do it. Maybe not yet, or maybe she needs more practice, but I encourage you to not give up.
