I do not want to get too lengthy....but here goes. We have six kids. The oldest is off to college. The next in line, is where our discouragement comes in. She is a great kid....loves God, is respectful, people love her where ever she goes. She has fulfilled all of her HS requirements, and has more credits than she needs. She has taken three biology classes, but not chemistry. She is a really good athlete, runs track for the HS here, voted team co- captain her senior year. All state NH track team for girls. Qualifies for meet of champs, New Englands etc. Helped her team to be number one in the state this year for large high schools. The coaches love her, personal trainers can't say enough about her, she is a real exaample to her friends on the team, and has formed some great friendships there. All this, and she will never brag about her self, she is very humble about these abilities. She is a self taught artist. She has volunteered at a place for children with disabilities, teaching them to ride horses. She has a 3.31 GPA....but she really cannot do math. She has tried and tried. We could never afford a tutor so we just plugged along with it. ON her ACT she scored, in the 75th percentile in one of the reading sections...but she scored horribly in the math. Because of this, no one will let her in college. She has some college coaches pretty disappointed as they were ready to give her a scholarship for running. Here is the thing. She is very diligent, well spoken, writes wonderfully. She is planning on becoming a fitness trainer, or entering an art program. She also loves animals, but does not think she has the math to even become a vet assistant. Today we went to a community college, and even there to just get a certificate in physical training, she has to take an accuplacer test for math, even though the certificate does not require math! I am all for her learning math to live by. If she had potential with algebra, that would be fine as well, but this is a serious issue with her. She probably has a LD in math, but we never wanted to go through the local school system to get her coded, they are on the failing school lists at best, so why would I trust them? Has any one else gone through this? All these years of homeschooling and I thought other than math she was doing great. She has friends who, drink, drug, party like crazy and lie and cheat, (not all of them of course) yet they get into school because they can get by on the SAT/ACT....she was so upset today. If she was lazy I could understand, but she is a hard worker. Thanks for any help anyone can give!
