| | Subject: | Ortin method and Language arts in general? (SWR/Sonlight) | |
Date: | June 12, 2007 at 10:12 am PST |
I am really interested in the Ortin method of teaching reading and spelling and have use SWR some with our kids. I am currently looking at switching to "The Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading" for it's ease of use over SWR's cluttered and complicated teacher manual. My question is about language arts in general using these kinds of programs. They all say they are complete language arts programs, but I wonder about the kids reading good books and comprehension. When I look at Sonlight, they use tons of good books as 'readers' that they use for the kids to study for developing comprehension and writing skills. The Ortin based programs don't really use any specific books, so I am curious about the literature side of things. Do I need to supplement with another literature program, or just have lots of good books around for the kids to read? Will these programs (Ortin lead a child into being able to write a good book report, for example? Thanks!
