Good for you, Grace, for recognizing a hole in your education that needs filling! As you have rightly deduced, logic is the key which education has lost!

I would suggest "The Argument Builder" by Shelly Johnson. It blends logic and rhetoric, and will build great debate skills because of its emphasis on argument. I really like the layout of this book: simple text, challenging exercises. I think you could get most of the way through it over the summer as it's meant to be a semester course (I spread it out over a year, but only worked in it once or twice a week). Be sure to get both the student and teacher's texts (you'll want the TM for the answers). Try looking for it used on alibris.com or abebooks.com, both are good for reliable sellers.

Best of luck with your studies, with your attitude I'm sure you'll go far!
