I have two adopted daugthers from Russia. We brought them home 4 1/2 years and 5 years ago.(three trips in 6 months, enough to kill anyone :)) My oldest daughter is now 11 1/2 she is running about 1-2 years behind socially, but seems to be right on track acedemically. My youngest daughter is the one that we struggle with. She was 3 when we brought her home, she will be 8 in June. She is operating on about a 4 year old level, just now "getting" the sounds of the alphabet. Math is a nightmare, we have to go over every concept about 10 times before I feel like we can move on. This daughter has been diagnosed with FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome). Her speech in not clear, like she doesn't hear things clearly, but her hearing is fine, it is her processing. I was told to have her tested for CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) but I have to wait until she is 9 or older, something about development. To answer the question of whether older internationally adopted children ever catch up....I would believe in time they will, but maybe not until adulthood. Also, I have a theory that they may be right on track for their country, they may only be behind by US standards. Hope this helps. Lora
