My dh and I have adopted 4 boys (domestic-via foster care) and all have some learning difficulties. Due to poor or no prenatal care, 2 of the boys being born at 26 and 27 weeks gestation (not birth brothers), neglect and abuse, their brains have been traumatized and injured. That is not to say that my sons aren't smart, because they are all very bright, and gifted in certain areas. It just means that we have to take longer to cover certain subjects and get more creative at conveying those ideas. But as another reader pointed out, our adopted children need a few extra years at home. My 16 year old son is just now in the 9th grade, but there is no way he would be ready for college life in 2 years. He's not ready for even a learners permit, but each day he makes great strides and I think might be ready next summer. One of the benefits of homeschooling, is tailoring your school to your student. The most important thing you can do for your child is love them. The three R's will come in time.
