I have a 20 yr old adopted from Romania at 7 and a 16 yr old adopted from India at 12. The 20 yr old I started in 1st grd and after 3 yrs in a private missionary school she was asked to skip 4th grade and go right to 5th (her age grade) when we moved and started public school. She when on the next yr to a private prep middle/high where although she was not the top student and had to work hard she did manage to keep B's. My son has struggled much more coming to English and schooling in general so late at the age of 12. I have him official one grade behind (homeschooling) but he has really just now caught up in some subjects. He still struggles and has to work slower then average (we have to go yr round to make it through a grade). Vocab is probably the hardest. FYI I have also homeschooled my 2 birth kids and have been working in international adoption since 1992. I wouldn't worry if they don't "catch up" and you have to school them 1-2 extra years. They have 60 more years after high school so why rush it. Most kids, especially adopted ones, need a few extra family years to mature anyway. I am in the process of adopting a 9 yr old from Haiti expect slow going from her.
