Some independent consumer testing reports have concluded that home cholesterol tests are reasonably accurate, when the instructions are carefully followed. All types of cholesterol testing have a wide margin of error, so it's recommended by the CDC to use an average of three measurements, rather than making assumptions on the basis of just one. A high total cholesterol level on a home test would be an indication that one would be well advised to have a laboratory lipids profile done from venous blood after twelve hours of fasting. This would give much more information to assess risk of heart disease, stroke and heart disease.
