My sisters and I used to watch my aunt exercise to Jack years ago. Now my sister MHA is the one that has re-aquainted us with him. She is an inspiration to us as far as following a vegan diet and following Jack's advice. He was a wonderful man and I will always remember: "if man made it, don't eat it" and "if it tastes good, spit it out."
Thank you, John, for this great tribute to a real health pioneer who paved the way, in many ways for the message of a healthy, vegan, nonviolent, joyful lifestyle.
Peace to you and to all beings,
Judy Carman
I too was a fan of Jacks, but Mr. Robbins is incorrect about something re Jack's egg whites consumption. In the above article Mr. Robbins states "he (Jack) occasionally ate egg whites". This is incorrect! Many years ago on Dr. John McDougall's TV program, Dr. McDougall interviewed Jack. Jack stated he ate 5 egg whites every morning for the protein benefits! I know Dr. McDougall knows that eating egg whites is UNHEALTHY/is unnecessary/taxes your kidneys. Dr M knows that the intention of an egg is to hatch a bird, not to promote health in a human, but he didn't question Jack out of respect. Apparently Jack was uneducated about the protein myth: for the best nutrition humans need to seek out amino acids from plant foods. Any concentrated animal protein that's consumed takes extra energy to digest, and like I mentioned is hard on your kidneys.
Jack is also wrong when he states "exercise is king, nutrition is queen." He's got them backwards: Nutrition is king, exercise is queen. Also, if one eats a variety of plants in a plant based diet, vitamins are unnecessary. Vitamins are not natural. It is my contention that taking vitamins over time is unhealthy/taxes your system. Lastly, I contend that one can exercise TOO MUCH! Jack was a great man, a great influence to others. BUT, maybe if he wouldn't've eaten egg whites, not taken those hard pill vitamins, and exercised more conservatively, he would've enjoyed life even longer! No disrespect, I loved the man.
"Jack stated he ate 5 egg whites every morning"
That's 1,825 egg whites a year!

Jack was an eccentric inspirational man. The world needs people like this. Eccentric to me is a term of endearment. So what if he wasn’t perfect in his exercise & nutritional advice, being ahead of his time in many things he was ahead of general scientific proof in these areas. He only said things he knew to be true by experience and was living proof of the success of what he said. I’m glad he lived a long life & remained happily active all of it. I go with his view that a joyously active life is good no matter what its length.
