Thanks Veraveggie and Plantpower! That's exactly my point. I've noticed that for some reason when humans get very dedicated to something...we have a tendency to shut down the love of others and instead become very harsh and judgmental. Whether its religion, or PETA, or raising kids, or whatever! Once WE get it...we expect everyone to also, at that very same moment.
Our negativity almost always has the opposite effect...

I'm sorry...can someone tell me the official definition of vegan?? I thought it was consuming a complete plant based diet minus all flesh and dairy. I'm sick of "higher than mighty" vegans acting like they have the market on that term. I choose a vegan diet...but I am (*shudder*), NOT an environmentalist nor an animal lover. Don't have an issue with animals or the environment...but that's not my reason. Believe it or not, some people DO choose to eat this way for health & religious reasons ALONE.
Soooo tired of people thinking they can win others over with hate instead of love...

Hey veraveggie: Veganism is parallel to a pregnancy: either one is or one isn't. Other dietary choices come under other terms. Much of the reason our world is in the toilet is due to our apathy and fear of standing up against the wrongs against human and non humans . Peer pressure ridicule requires courage to face over time. Yes! You would do well to "shudder" knowing of the systemized torture of animals, as well as the destruction of our earth.
I concur - that's why I don't call myself a vegan. I'm someone following a plant based diet and/or a vegetarian. The trouble is there are no words really for someone who's a dietary vegan. Sorry we don't know what to call ourselves. It's not our fault. =)

I know all about it, I read Diet For a New America 20 years ago, did not fall off the turnip truck just yesterday. ;-) I understand where you are coming from though, that's why I told the previous poster it depends on who you ask. Certainly a vegan in the real sense of the word is different than one who is just following a plant-based only diet.
cheers!

Arguably, by the standard, there are no true vegans, only those aspiring to, as best they can, lead a life free of animal products. It's so pervasive, however. Have you ever purchased a book? There's a strong chance that animal products were used in the production of its pages and binding. Have you ever used crayons? Another one.
The list of items that prevent one from being a true vegan are so very many in number that to utilize such a strict definition, particularly in light of the fact that Vegans are commonly understood (however mistaken the view) to be people who do not consume any animal-based food products.
Let's face it, if someone says "vegan diet" nearly everyone will understand what it's supposed to mean. Which means it does in fact exist. Hell, it specifically refers to "diet" as opposed to the vegan lifestyle as a whole. That's sort of a discussion ender.
