Along with fellow blogger Julieanna Hever, the Plant Based Dietitian, I run a program called the Whole Food 30 Day Challenge. The idea is to eat a completely whole food/plant based diet for 30 days, free of ANY processed foods, including sugar, oil and salt. The participants have had remarkable results such as completely reversing their Type II diabetes in only 23 days and going off all of their medications, to losing as much as 20 pounds. When the challenge is over we all go out to dinner as a group, usually to one of our favorite vegan restaurants such as Cru in Silverlake.
When this last challenge ended the group really wanted pizza, but some of them could not have wheat and one could not have gluten. So we found this amazing restaurant in Woodland Hills that made the most scrumptious vegan and gluten-free pizza ever. They also had delicious gluten-free pasta and are working on a gluten free vegan eggplant parmesan as we speak.
They do alot of fundraisers for the Autism Society so their kitchen is actually certified as a gluten-free facility. On the pizza you can have a choice of either Follow Your Heart cheese or Daiya. I also enjoyed their house salad very much. The lettuce was fresh and crisp and it came with your choice of 3 vegan dressing. And the serving was huge.
We had the entire back room to ourselves and the owners Barbara and Jordon Klempner could not be more welcoming or accomadating. Apparently this restaurant has been there 30 years!!! Who knew? They are famous for their hot garlic cheese rolls which are neither vegan nor gluten free, but Jordan decided to make a vegan version for our celebration. I literally could not stop eating them and had 3 (although my friend Rebecca beat me out with 5!). I had more bread in that meal than I have in the last 2 years, but it was so worth it. The rolls were made with Daiya and are vegan but not gluten free. They are also not on the menu, yet, so you may have to call in advance and request them.
I was so impressed with this restaurant and the quality of the food and the service that I booked it for my husband's 50th birthday. While I wholeheartedly love to support all the great vegan restaurants out there, it's nice to have a place like this where you can go with people who won't go to veg restaurants with you and still have an amzing meal yourself.
