As my children get older, I have the perfect excuse to enjoy epic children's adventures - again, for Narnia or The Lord of the Rings or Star Wars - for the first time, with Harry Potter.

In real life, I'm scornful of the idea that anyone is better simply by birth, but discovering that grungy Aragorn is the Heir of Isildur, or that weedy Harry is actually a wizard, fires my imagination. Why?

It's always the same: the fight between good and evil. Imagining there are people who dedicate their lives and risk their own safety to stop bad people doing bad things...it's inspiring and compelling. And fans of these epics pour limitless energy into keeping the fantasy alive, all for the good feelings.

Making the magic real

What if some of that energy were used in the real world? In real life, a dark wizard rarely lives in a tower on a smoking volcano as a target for the good guys. But evil is out there. Or, if you don't like the word evil, there are people and groups in the world who are doing great harm for their own benefit. And there are people trying to stop them.

Millions eagerly watch Frodo toiling along with his hopeless task. Why aren't we equally excited for our real-life heroes who actually do dedicate their lives and risk their own safety to do the right thing?

Hen's Night is a short movie with no special effects. It shows real people working long and extremely hard to make one brief public statement simply because they hate how horribly animals suffer when they are farmed for food.

They hope the truth will eventually make a difference.

Activists like Noam Chomsky and Penny Bright spend their lives telling everybody about the corruption of the people in power over us. We know power corrupts; why aren't more of us cheering them on?

Maybe we need more special effects. Or capes.

The power of the dark side

Real-life activists won't get encased in anything as cool as carbonite. Instead, they risk jailtime, fines, beatings, or even death, for saying out loud what those in charge want kept silent. (some victims: Judi Bari, Rachel Corrie, Mohamed al-Gendy, and more.)

This is exactly the sort of willing self-sacrifice worshipped in fiction. Yet most people roll their eyes, call them troublemakers or conspiracy theorists, or ignore them as time-wasters. If they get hurt, they asked for it.

Even nonviolent activists get called terrorists. The information they share is legally protected by "commercial sensitivity" to protect profits. The new Ag-Gag bills, making it illegal to record what actually happens in an animal farm, should alarm any animal-lover anywhere.

Activist Fan Club

When they rolled down the Ban Cages banner in Hen's Night, that was true magic in action.

I'm a big fan. Who's with me?

Confusing, to say the least. As a big fan of Mark Bittman, I continue to be mystified by his refusal to take a stand and tell us with abundant clarity exactly why we should be eating a whole foods, plant-based diet. He probably knows more about the consequences of our food choices than all the other prominent journalists combined---yet he still has a tendency to "beat around the bush."

As for not using the "vegan" moniker to describe himself, I agree with him on that decision but for different reasons. Mark seems to think that we may actually "need" to eat some animal protein so he never really closes the deal with his readers. In an article that clearly describes a plethora of health, social and environmental issues of eating animal foods, Mark also throws in this confusing paragraph:

Animal products have a special place in this discussion, because unlike hyper-processed foods they have been a part of the diet of most humans since humans existed, and because their concentration of nutrients makes consuming at least some of them convenient and perhaps even smart.

I think BEEF Magazine is pleased that Mark is helping to keep the public confused.

Mark goes on to say that he follows his own VB6 plan---vegan before 6 p.m. That probably means that he eats animal protein almost every night and he also admits to cheating. That probably means that he eats animal protein frequently before 6 p.m. I just did a search for "vb6." Nothing else. The first thing I saw was an article in BEEF Magazine---saying that Mark Bittman wasn't pleasing anyone with that formula for eating.

Like President Clinton, he is a winner and he will return.

So why did Lance choose to come forward now? Many are saying that he did it for selfish reasons---just so he could participate in sanctioned races. But I think the main reason(s) are right there beside him in this photo---his children.

In Paris with his three oldest children: Luke (now 13) and twin girls Grace and Isabelle

Clearly, the most painful part of the interview was when Lance talked about overhearing his son, Luke (13), defending his dad to some other kids. At that moment, he knew that he simply must make things right---no matter what the consequences. And now he has begun the "process" of doing just that.

That "process" may end up costing him his entire fortune (and more)---but it can't take away the fact that he is recognized by over one billion people in the world---about half of which (according to surveys) have probably already forgiven him. And there will be more. With history as a guide, we know that most people will ultimately forgive him for his cheating and lies---as long as he is sincere and begins to earn back the global respect that he once had. I happen to think that his comeback could be all about revealing the "real truth" about cancer to the entire world. Continue reading this article.

That was the title of the lead segment of the Dr. Oz show on 12-11-12. While he occasionally presents some very helpful information (See my "home run" blog below), his typical audience has no idea what to believe. That's because the information presented on Tuesday is likely to be contradicted a few days later.

But let's not blame Dr. Oz. We must understand that he is in the entertainment business---not the health-promotion business. If he just talked about healthy stuff, his show would be cancelled in less than a month.

But the sad part of this story is that millions of Americans take everything they hear on his show as fact---and that could sometimes be hazardous to their health. Confusion over clarity is not good for promoting health. But it is good for making money.

So what about this new book, The Great Cholesterol Myth? Dr. Oz interviewed the two authors, a cardiologist and a doctor of nutrition and simply asked them questions. From their book's description on Amazon, here are a few examples of things that Jonny Bowden and Stephen Sinatra covered in the interview. Click here to continue reading this article, which includes a comment by Dr. T.
This time the title is Give Frozen Foods A Chance

Well, Dr. Oz has done it again. He's back on the cover of TIME with a story that's guaranteed to keep the consumers confused about food. But then, that's exactly what makes food producers happy. His latest article appears in the 12-3-12 issue and I have provided a link below to the online article that you may not be able to view unless you're a TIME customer.

December 3, 2012 Cover of TIME

So what's the problem? From the looks of the cover, it looks like Dr. Oz is going to write about a truly health promoting diet---like the ones that Esselstyn, Ornish, McDougall, Fuhrman, and Barnard all use to reverse chronic diseases in their patients. But he doesn't.

Mehmet and Lisa Oz; she must be the vegetarian in the family.

Ostensibly, the article was written to help people pick out the best values for their families; things like recommending that we give frozen or canned veggies, grains and legumes a chance.

But then he proceeds to talk about all the other "good" foods in a healthy diet---things like beef, chicken, ice cream, olive oil, etc. From the article, a few highlights: Click here to continue reading this article...

And the solution is right under your nose---it's the FOOD!

Dear President Obama,

Congratulations on winning your second term. I concluded long ago that it would take a second-term president to make any serious headway in replacing our toxic western diet with one that actually promotes health.

If you'd tried to do that in your first term, you would've never been elected for a second term. But if you don't do it now, our only chance for any kind of serious leadership from 1600 Pennsylvania avenue is about eight years away---from the next president who may win a second term.

Why is that? It's because there is simply too much money and special interests riding on maintaining the status quo. But, you're an honest man who doesn't have to worry anymore about those special interests who wish to keep our healthcare, food and pharmaceutical industries just the way they are.

It is inevitable that all of those industries will change dramatically in the next fifty or sixty years, but with strong leadership from the White House, significant progress could be made in less than ten years. Not only can we save $2 trillion on heath care, but we can show the world how to curb global warming, end world hunger, reduce our carbon footprint and end the needless suffering of billions of food animals per week.

Michelle Obama seems to have the ear of the former president in this picture; just think what they could accomplish if they teamed up to tell the world the truth about nutrition.

Everyone applauds the work that Michelle has been doing with her vegetable garden, Walmart and the school lunch programs. But she is coming up way short when it comes to telling everyone EXACTLY what they should be eating to accomplish the goals outlined in the previous paragraph.

Your good friend, former President Clinton, knows all about what we should be eating, but apparently he's not yet connected the dots when it comes to all of the other global issues that are driven by our food choices. Click here to continue reading...

[updated for 2012] As a musician myself, I had often noticed that there seemed to be a lot of other veg musicians around. So a couple of years ago I did some historical research and put the results online. I called it 'East Meets West and West Eats Meat' which is borrowed from a 1969 Indo-Jazz album featuring Indian sitar-player Ravi Shankar and some American jazz musicians.

No doubt there have been countless Indian veg musicians for centuries, but it's not easy for me to find individual names before Ravi Shankar became famous in the west. If any Indians reading this can help then do get in touch.

Meanwhile our trail begins with European classical music in the 19th century, and the first name that comes up is the inevitably controversial Richard Wagner. Before anyone hits the comments button, please read the article about him on ivu.org - just click on his name from the page linked below. It shows that he was never vegetarian himself, but a lot of other musicians were because he said they should be... Whatever conclusions you come to, we can't just ignore him in this historical survey.

On the website I've tried to look at the connections between all these people - who knew who, and how they influenced each other. Later classical composers and musicians were influenced towards veg*ism by Theosophy and eastern religions, along with all the usual reasons we have today. (photo right is American composer Philip Glass)

The second section deals with Jazz musicians - Texas in 1949 seems an unlikely place for a long-haired African-American vegetarian, but that's where Ornette Coleman came in, age 19. Many more 'modern' jazz veg*ns soon followed, reaching a peak in the 1960s, after which it gets increasingly difficult to separate all the musical genres, with a lot of fusions going on. (photo left: Ornette Coleman)

The third group is blues, country, rock, pop etc. - we can trace veg*ism among those musicians back to 1940s USA as well, but most of the early veg rock musicians were in England. Very soon there were huge numbers of them on both sides of the Atlantic. The biggest problem with this group is their inconsistency, many were veg*n at some point but didn't always stick to it for long. (photo right: George Harrison)

This is meant to be a historical survey, it doesn't deal much with current pop/rock stars as they come and go much too frequently - you can find plenty of those in the VegSource 'celebs' section. If anyone can add anything please use the comments below.

To read all the details go to: www.ivu.org/history/music.html

More about one musician:

Cecil Sharp - veg folk hero

One of the biggest problems in researching vegetarian history is that biographies are too often written by meat-eaters.

Probably the worst example in recent years was the movie 'Gandhi' which won 8 Oscars in 1983 - in the entire 3 hour epic was there was not even the slightest hint of Gandhi's vegetarianism. Despite him stating many times that his reverence for *all* life was of central importance in everything he did.

Hollywood has never been noted for historical accuracy, but that was rather extreme.

Cecil Sharp (1859-1924) is not as famous as Gandhi of course, but still suffered the same treatment. The original biography, written by his friend of 22 years in 1933, just about managed to mention his vegetarianism twice. The revised edition, re-written by his former assistant in 1967, left out one of those - making it look like his vegetarianism was merely an inconvenient necessity for his health. The comment that was deleted stated quite clearly that he was 'vegetarian by conviction' - which makes far more sense when we see what else he was involved in.

So who was Cecil Sharp? If you've ever heard folk music on either side of the Atlantic, then you'll have heard the results of his work. In the early years of the 20th century he travelled through many villages and small communities, in both England and the American Appalachian mountains, collecting traditional folk songs and dances, just in time before they died out. (the sign below right is in Hot Springs, North Carolina)

The tunes he collected initially inspired many classical composers to write pieces based on them. But they also inspired a generation of folk singers, culminating in the likes of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez in the folk boom of the 1960s. Without Cecil Sharp that might never have happened, and today the English Folk Dance and Song Society is still based at Cecil Sharp House in London.

Sharp was probably vegetarian from his university days, and remained 'vegetarian by conviction' until he died. The earliest influence probably came from Richard Wagner's promotion of veg*ism, and Sharp later gave two of his children the middle names of Tristan and Isolde - from one of Wagner's operas.

Then he became friends with George Bernard Shaw, probably the most famous vegetarian of the day, and he was also close to other vegetarian musicians like Percy Grainger and Gustav Holst. Sharp was involved with Theosophy, the Fabian Society and many other pro-veg oranizations - it was clearly a central part of his life and influenced everything he did. Not that you would get any idea of that from reading the biography.

Below (l-r): George Bernard Shaw (Irish dramatist), Percy Grainger (Australian composer), Gustav Holst (British, Swedish parents, composer) - all vegetarian, living in London and personal friends of Cecil Sharp.

Not drafted after playing for the University of Tennessee, Arian thought at first that his football career was over.

Labeled by Sporting News as the "NFL's Most Interesting Man."

Later, after spending a year riding the bench in Houston, he got his big break---starting the first game of the 2010 and literally exploded on the field, gaining 230 yards rushing and scoring three touchdowns. He went on the lead the entire league in rushing for the season.

In an earlier article (See link below), it was reported that his new vegan diet was causing controversy. Here's what Arian had to say about that:

Who would have thought that someone cutting meat out of their daily eating regimen would cause such hullabaloo. As Foster says, “People feel so strong about meat and milk. I wish they felt this strong about peace.”

Regarding the controversy, from the article: "Some of Foster’s Twitter followers gave him a hard time for his announcement. In response to Foster saying he’s never drank an entire glass of milk, one twitterer went as far to say he did when he was a baby. Foster responded, “My mom didn’t produce cow milk.”

When asked in the CBS interview (9-5-12) about him being called the "NFL's Most Interesting Man," he replied that that kind of thing accompanies success. When he and his team weren't doing very well, no one ever thought of him as being that interesting. But now, they want to know all about that poetry, the quantum physics and yes---that vegan diet.
At a recent dinner party, somehow the discussion got around to politics---despite the best efforts of the hostess to keep the conversation on less controversial topics. Unfortunately, one of my friends felt victimized as she was the only one among the after-dinner lingerers who was supporting a certain candidate for President.

While walking down the street toward our respective homes, she told me how uncomfortable she was and that she really didn't like to argue. Since I had been relatively silent during her "roasting," she wanted to know what I thought. I told her that I was a registered Independent and that I made my decision based on my assessment of each candidate's readiness, leadership skills, and integrity. Ultimately, I usually choose the candidate with whom I would place the most trust. I voted Republican in 2004 and Democrat in 2008.

Not very many people would like to see either one of these two guys become president.

I added that unfortunately none of the candidates are talking about any of the truly major issues---in my opinion. Things like world hunger, global warming, the obvious answer to our health care fiasco or my favorite topic of late---the long-term sustainability of the human race.

As I told her, forget saving the planet, it's the human race that's in trouble. My friend was delighted with my assessment and said that she would sleep better because of my sharing it with her.

I went home that night thinking more on the topic of the evening. Presidential candidates always argue about the same short term issues that affect the most Americans: gas prices, health care reform, unemployment, social security, unpopular wars, and abortion. And that brings up poor old Representative Akin. As far as trust goes, I'll just say that I wouldn't trust him very far---and leave it at that.

Promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth---and the longterm sustainability of the human race.

For me, I'm trying to stay on point. As for the presidential candidates, I'm not revealing my choice today---mainly because I try to keep politics out of my blog. Shortly after I started this blog 566 days ago, I heard from a reader in the UK, saying that my daily blog was like a "relentless drumbeat." I took it as a compliment and have been beating that same drum ever since.

And as long as I am alive, my drumbeat message will continue to be about promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth. And there is no doubt in my mind that a whole foods, plant-based diet for humans is a huge part of that process.

It works for our health, for the environment, for our ability to feed a projected 9 or 10 billion people by 2050, for fossil fuel conservation and for the two billion innocent animals that we torture and kill every single week for our dinner tables. It could also lower our cost of healthcare in the United States by around two trillion dollars.

You show me a candidate with that kind of message and he or she will get my vote. Unfortunately, my candidate wouldn't get elected because that platform would not interest the short-term thinking masses whose support he/she must have to win. So where is the leadership that we need going to come from? It must come from people like you and me---people who are not afraid to take a stand. It's starts by being the change you want to see in this world (Gandhi).

Meanwhile, life goes on in the wacky world of American politics. One ridiculous, relatively insignificant firestorm after another. Yesterday, I heard the latest on the Mr. Akin story:

Akin apologized again in multiple television interviews on Wednesday for his earlier comments, but said he intended to remain in the race to be able to promote his staunch anti-abortion beliefs and to respect the wishes of Missouri voters.

"The people of Missouri chose me, and I don't believe it's right for party bosses to decide to override those voters," Akin said. "It makes me uncomfortable to think that the party bosses are going to dictate who runs, as opposed to the election process."

The latest terrible advice from our "system" arrived in my mailbox today---and was contained within my copy of the August-September issue of The AARP Magazine. This time, their health geniuses managed to recommend a dairy product AND added sugar within one product. On page 22, in an article entitled How to Stay Fit Forever, this was one of their twelve recommendations---from Stuart Phillips, Ph.D., a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

One of the most powerful carcinogens ever discovered, cow's milk is recommended as a health drink in the AARP magazine.

Drink chocolate milk. "Consuming some protein after exercise, especially as we get older, appears to help the muscles rebuild themselves more effectively," Phillips says. When the protein is combined with carbohydrate, such as the sugar in chocolate milk, muscles recover even better. If you're trying to lose weight, "plain milk works well too," Phillips adds---but it isn't nearly as much fun to drink.

So the "protein myth" is still alive and well as it is being reinforced by one of the largest, the most powerful and the most trusted organizations in the world. Although misinformation like this no longer surprises me, it does help to strengthen my resolve to continue spreading the simple truth about nutrition to anyone willing to listen.

With 37 million members, This could be AARP’s finest hour. In surveys, the organization has usually ranked among the most trusted institutions in the nation, along with groups like the American Red Cross and the Consumers Union. AARP knows there is political power in numbers — and in organization. In the past, however, it had only to activate a small portion of its huge membership base to register political impact. “All they have to do is whisper,” one consultant told me.

Well, that depends on who you ask. If you ask me...

Without a doubt, Dr. Mehmet Oz is the most famous doctor in the country---but we all know that he is now in the entertainment business. Therefore, he is no longer working as a real doctor. As for the most famous real doctor in America, up until now, I have been referring to Dr. Dean Ornish---for lots of well-earned reasons.

But now I have decided to award that moniker to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and the chief medical correspondent for CNN. As if he is not busy enough already, he has also authored three books in the past four years, a novel, Monday Mornings in 2012, Cheating Death in 2010 and Chasing Lives in 2008.

I'm not sure how much time he spends as the "associate chief of neurosurgery," but it is his through his work as a journalist that he has earned my sincere respect. While I have been reading and watching Sanjay for years, it was his CNN Special, The Last Heart Attack (August 2011), where I really think he hit the ball out of the park. (See link below) And I could tell by the way he answered questions from other reporters, that he really "gets it" when it comes to knowing how to reverse heart disease.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, an emerging leader in the grassroots revolution to re-claim our health through plant-based nutrition. A part of the SOLUTION.

Earlier this year, (April 2012) Sanjay did a piece called "Sugar Kills" on 60-Minutes and further secured his place as the "most famous real doctor in the America." Now, just this past week (7-31-12), he published an Op-Ed piece in the New York Times entitled More Treatment, More Mistakes. It was that article that inspired me to write this one. He led off thusly: (See link below for full article)

DOCTORS make mistakes. They may be mistakes of technique, judgment, ignorance or even, sometimes, recklessness. Regardless of the cause, each time a mistake happens, a patient may suffer. We fail to uphold our profession’s basic oath: “First, do no harm.”

A reasonable estimate is that medical mistakes now kill around 200,000 Americans every year. That would make them one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Why have these mistakes been so hard to prevent?

He went on to talk about the status of American medicine which features a staggering number of tests and procedures. He quotes a statistic, "Since 1996, the percentage of doctor visits leading to at least five drugs’ being prescribed has nearly tripled, and the number of M.R.I. scans quadrupled." He went on to say that:

Many procedures, tests and prescriptions are based on legitimate need. But many are not. In a recent anonymous survey, orthopedic surgeons said 24 percent of the tests they ordered were medically unnecessary. This kind of treatment is a form of defensive medicine, meant less to protect the patient than to protect the doctor or hospital against potential lawsuits.

Herein lies a stunning irony. Defensive medicine is rooted in the goal of avoiding mistakes. But each additional procedure or test, no matter how cautiously performed, injects a fresh possibility of error. CT and M.R.I. scans can lead to false positives and unnecessary operations, which carry the risk of complications like infections and bleeding. The more medications patients are prescribed, the more likely they are to accidentally overdose or suffer an allergic reaction. Even routine operations like gallbladder removals requireanesthesia, which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Finally, Sanjay poses the question, "So what do we do to be safer? " In my opinion, we must begin a new era of health-promotion. The more we promote health, the less disease we will have. And the less disease we have, the fewer tests, the fewer procedures and the fewer chances for mistakes. But, since the bulk of the revenue of our current health care system is derived from disease management, our doctors have no financial incentives for us to be healthy.

It has been said that if we were starting a new health care system from scratch, that it would be easy to devise one that rewarded doctors for making their patients healthy. Unfortunately, changing what we have today from the inside is probably impossible. But changing it with a grassroots revolution of people taking charge of their own health is possible. Difficult, but possible.

Ted Turner, founder of CNN. He and Sanjay both live in Atlanta; maybe they should get together and talk about kicking our grassroots revolution up a few notches.

And I happen to think that Dr. Sanjay Gupta would be the ideal person to lead that revolution. All he needs to change the world is a super-wealthy sponsor who would pony up a few billion dollars to get the program off the ground---and convince everyone in the world that we really don't "need" to eat ANY animal protein to be healthy. How about the guy that created his current employer, CNN? We all know that Ted loves a cause.

Here is one final quote from Sanjay's article that caught my eye:

Hospitals are supposed to take care of the sickest members of our society and uphold the highest standards of patient care. But hospitals are also charged with teaching doctors, and every doctor has a first mistake.

So why not take charge of your health today and lower your risk of being the innocent victim of one of those inevitable mistakes that humans make while doing their work? For your convenience, I have provided the source article here along with a few of my earlier blogs on this topic.

Not only don't you need oil to make a delicious salad dressing, you don't need nuts or seeds either! :) This dressing takes minutes to make and you can easily change the flavor by using different mustards or substituting lime or even orange juice for the lemon juice. We love it on our salads but it is also great as a dip on steamed artichokes. You can subsitute whole pitted dates for the date syrup but then you would have to use a blender. You can buy organic date syrup at Amazon and at www.ilovedatelady.com.
