Judge
Delays Ruling Another Month
February
25, 2003
The judge in
the vegetarians v. McDonald's case delayed ruling on the allocation
of settlement funds until March 25th.
During the hearing
in a Chicago courtoom today, the judge complained about attorneys
fee petitions submitted by some of the plaintiff lawyers and instructed
them to resubmit petitions to help him determine how much fees he
will award.
The judge also
expressed discomfort that several of the proposed groups, including
three listed under the "vegetarian" category, may not
be 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, as called for under the settlement.
A consortium
of a wide number of celebrated vegetarian individuals is
forming which will likely appeal any decisions which are counter
to the interests of the vegetarian class. Legal experts say an appeal
under Illinois law would add another two to three years to the litigation,
meaning the case may not be fully adjudicated for several more years.
