About Bryanna Clark Grogan
To Bryanna's Discussion Board

Bryanna is the author of 7 vegan cookbooks andis co-author of several more. All are published by The Book Publishing Co., Summertown, TN, a vegetarian publishing company. Some of Bryanna's books are listed by the USFDA on their list of healthy vegetarian cookbooks

Bryanna has devoted over 35 years to the study of cooking and nutrition. She wrote newspaper cooking columns for over 20 years, and was a frequent contributer and reviewer for Vegetarian Times magazine for about 5 years. She has conducted cooking workshops and classes locally and at several Vegetarian Summerfests (NAVS), and numerous health conferences and gatherings. In February 2002 she was a guest speaker at the International Scientific Conference on Chinese Plant Based Nutrition and Cuisine in Philadelphia, hosted by the American Vegan Society and the Institute for Plant Based Nutrition. In 2001 she joined Vegsource.com as a "resident expert" and moderator of their New Vegetarian discussion board. She has been a vegan since 1988.

Bryanna was born in California, but has resided in British Columbia, Canada for many years. She raised a family of four children and now has 6 grandchildren. She was a La Leche League leader for several years and taught cooking and baking at LLL International conferences in Chicago, Kansas City, Washington, DC and Anaheim, as well as serving as an Associate Editor for the LLL official cookbook, Whole Foods for the Whole Family, still in print (NAL Books). She was instrumental in opening the first vegetarian restaurant in her area.

Bryanna loves experimenting and learning. The main focus of her cooking is low-fat vegan cooking, particularly ethnic cooking. She is considered an expert at making tofu appealing to die-hard "soyaphobes", but in her books 20 Minutes to Dinner, Nonna's Italian Kitchen, she has addressed the needs of vegans allergic to soy by providing non-soy alternatives to most of the soy-based recipes. With each book she learns more about the processes of cooking-how and why things work. Her great joy is sharing what she's learned with others.

She plans to write a mystery novel with a vegan detective in the near future.

Bryanna’s books are, in order of publication:

The (Almost) No-Fat Cookbook: Everyday Vegetarian Recipes (Sort of “all-American” style recipes.)

The (Almost) No-Fat Holiday Cookbook: Festive Vegetarian Recipes (Lots of ethnic recipes—17 holidays from different cultures and religions, throughout the year.)

20 Minutes to Dinner; Quick, Low-Fat, Low-Calorie Vegetarian Meals

Nonna’s Italian Kitchen: Delicious Homestyle Vegan Cuisine (The only vegan Italian cookbook on the market; still on amazon.com’s vegan best-seller list.)

Soyfoods Cooking for a Positive Menopause (Lots of solid information and quick, delicious and easy soy recipes.)

Authentic Chinese Cuisine for the Contemporary Kitchen: All Vegan Recipes

SOME REVIEWS:

NONNA’ ITALIAN KITCHEN—(customer reviews from amazon.com) Like being on vacation in Tuscany!, July 20, 2001 Reviewer: A reader from California USA This is a wonderful book with a nice combination of quick and other more involved recipes. I love Grogan's side notes on the recipes and her comments in the beginning of the book. The recipes are divided up into courses of an authentic Italian meal, so it's easy to plan a full menu, or just a single dish. These dishes would appeal to anyone, vegan or not. These are good wholesome meals.

I Love This Book!, June 2, 2001 Reviewer: melrieder (see more about me) from New Haven, CT USA I have been looking so long for decent "cheese" fillings for pasta, and I've found it here. She gives tasty alternatives to soy in many of her recepies, which I appreciate, because being vegan doesn't necessarily mean that you like Tofu.

That's Italian!, July 13, 2000 Reviewer: wini (see more about me) from Charlotte, NC This book is not only a must for vegan kitchens but for everyone who likes Italian food. The recipes make very authentic tasting vegan versions of popular dishes. My vegan friends are enjoying this food too, always the best sign.

Informative and Enjoyable, January 18, 2000 Reviewer: A reader from USA This was a great addition to my collection of vegetarian recipe books. Not only does it list authentic vegan Italian recipes of all kinds, it explains every ingredient and gives background on Italian food and veganism in general, without dwelling on things we already know as informed vegetarians! It would make a good gift for anyone who loves to cook, vegetarian or not.

Veganly essential!, September 11, 1999 Reviewer: bs-sj@mail.tele.dk from Copenhagen, Denmark What a wonder this cookbook is! I don't hesitate to say this is by far the most wonderful vegan cookbook I have ever bought; it is simply packed with recipes (and variations), and don't be scared off by the lack of photos, every recipe is simply so mouthwatering! Bryanna Clark Grogan provides delicious alternatives to dairy-, egg- and meatproducts, and there is simply everything you'd need in this book: bread recipes, antipasti, soups, pasta dishes, vegetable dishes, meat-style dishes, desserts (great ice-creams!), you name it. I find myself reading the book again and again, thinking how will I ever have time enough to try out them all ... it is an essential to any vegan kitchen!

Nonna”s Italian Kitchen:

**From Ron Pickarski, author of EcoCuisine and Friendly Foods; Culinary Olympics gold-medal winning executive chef:

“This excellent vegetarian Italian Cookbook by Bryanna Clark Grogan brings the spirit, history, and cuisine of Italy into the 21st century with a breath of fresh air. She inspires the reader with her culinary wisdom and artfully marries vegetarianism with traditional Italian cuisine in an authentic manner.”

**From Ken Bergeron, author of professional vegetarian Cooking; Culinary Olympics gold-medal winning executive chef:

“Nonna’s Italian Kitchen unfolds like a wonderful Italian Meal. As would the courses of a feast, each recipe stimulates the taste buds and keeps one anticipating the next chapter. From ther soundly written, innovative, and well-researched text, Bryanna serves up delicious information with the generosity of an Italian grandmother.”

**Fron Mindy Toomay, author of Best 125 Meatless Pasta Dishes, Best 125 Vegetable Dishes, Best 125 Meatless Main Dishes; and several other books:

“Bryanna Clark Grogan’s grasp of Italian ingredients and techniques is extraordinary, and her translation of traditional dishes into vegan terms is a boon to health-wise cooks. But beyond mere instruction, her book delivers tremendous inspiration. In it, grogan imparts not just the substance, but the soul, of Italian cooking.”

THE (ALMOST NO-FAT) COOKBOOK: (customer reviews from amazon.com)

"Regular foods" from scratch!, November 24, 2000 Reviewer: Celeste Dickson from Austin, TX USA I love this book because it shows how to make regular, satisfying meals...without meat! An earlier review of this book mentioned that you will never make another Boca Burger...the best thing about this book is, you can control what ingredients go in your meal (organic, no-GMOs for me!). I especially like the seitan recipe, which allows you to make delicious seitan for pennies what it costs to buy the prepared stuff. The pizza is also excellent; the homemade crust really makes it. This is a book that makes vegetarianism easy.

Best Burger Yet!, August 18, 2000 Reviewer: Sandy (vegetarian over 30 years) from Seattle, WA USA I love this book, you will never buy another boca burger. Once you make up some of the staples in this book most recipes come together quickly. Many of the dishes are of the real comfort food variety. I also have the Holiday Cookbook and equally enjoy the recipes (some are repeated).

One of the best vegan cookbooks I've ever found, October 13, 1998 Reviewer: levin@sfsymphony.org from USA This book provides a wide array of completely vegan sauces, sides, entrees, and desserts that are all extremely low in fat and all very easy and quick to prepare. Almost every one of the recipes that I've tried were excellent(and I've made almost all of them. Of special note are the baked goods and desserts that are vegan and fat-free (or very low fat) yet resemble their dairy and egg laden counterparts. Favorites include eggless French Toast, Non dairy sour cream, tofu loaf (different from any 'meatloaf' tofu recipe you've tried), Drop biscuits, vanilla cake/muffins, and cheezecake.

THE (ALMOST) NO-FAT HOLIDAY COOKBOOK: (customer review from amazon.com)

Thank you, Bryanna!, January 17, 2000 Reviewer: A reader from Iowa City, USA This is one of the best vegetarian recipe collections I've come across. Unlike many veggie cookbooks, this one does not assume that just because you're not eating meat that it's fine to go ahead and load up on nuts, cheese and other high fat ingredients. As a matter of fact, the recipes are vegan, so there is no cheese or milk at all (or honey, I don't think...). The recipes are easy to make and very healthful and DELICIOUS. I love the no-fat basic cookie dough. Try it, it's amazing. I keep making them for omni-vorous friends and they are a hit every time

20 MINUTES TO DINNER (customer reviews from amazon.com):

AWESOME BOOK WITH DELICIOUS AND FAST RECIPES!!, May 14, 2001 Reviewer: Jennifer (see more about me) Bryanna Clark Grogan has written other great books such as, a no fat holiday cookbook for vegetarians and an authentic chinese cuisine cookbook. IT IS FANTASTIC!! and it has great tasting, easy to make fast recipes that are not only delicious but FAT FREE!. I am not a vegetarian but I need to watch my weight because of high colesterol and these recipes are good tasting and help me with my diet. Not only will these meat, egg, and dairy-free recipes be just the thing for putting together a well-balanced dinner (on those nights when you just can't figure out where the time went), but they'll be just the thing for creating a quick snack or appetizer for unexpected company and making that who-has-time-to-cook lunch. Most of the recipes are based on the Mediterranean/Asian model using lots of grains, fruits, and vegetables. Nutritional analyses accompany each recipe. I think this is a great low fat cookbook and I highly recommend it.

Very delicious and quick to make., April 20, 2001 Reviewer: A reader from Los Angeles, CA GREAT recipes and very easy to make. Almost all of the dishes took less than 30 minutes to make and they were ALL delicious. I thought the spinach pizza was the best!. I have cooked most of these dishes for my family and everybody seems very pleased. The book offers many different foods such as, flavorful spanish rice, seafood, soups, appetizers, spagetti, lasagna, many salads and other fresh foods. The fish recipes were all great and I found them easy to make. The book takes you step-by -step into the preparation process. I was very satisfied with all the recipes contained in this book and the price is very reasonable

This book offers delicious recipes, January 17, 2001 Reviewer: Serena Lancaster (see more about me) from Arizona I have totally changed the way I cook now. I'm not a vegetarian, but I do want to eat healthy, so this book really came in handy. I have tried several of the recipes already and I'm impressed as to how delicious they are. The book takes you step by step and the instruction is nery easy to follow. What I likes the most is, that the book provides you with many recipes, the hardest part was picking which one I wanted to cook first.

SOYFOODS COOKING FOR A POSITIVE MENOPAUSE (customer reviews from amazon.com):

Good Advice Good Food, July 13, 2000 Reviewer: wini (see more about me) from Charlotte, NC I am always excited when a new cookbook by Bryanna is published. There is so much mis-information and hype around soy and menopause. Bryanna has done a great service to women (and their families and friends) by presenting her well-researched information in such a clear, realistic manner. The recipes make wonderful food, no surprise to anyone who has cooked from her other books. Anyone who would like to learn more about cooking with soy will benefit from this book. A great cookbook for everyone!, April 1, 2000 Reviewer: Julianne Bonner (see more about me) from UK Although Bryanna might have aimed this cookbook at menopausal women its content would benefit everyone - vegans and non-vegans alike. Up-to-date health advice and suggestions are included at the front of the book but its main appeal lies in the wide range of delicious recipes that all include the wonder food, soy. I am nowhere near menopausal age but I bought this simply because I love Bryanna's books in general. I think the title might put some people off before they check out the content, but do take more than a peek because it's definitely worth it. Bryanna Clark Grogan has come up trumps again! (Also recommended by the same author - Nonna's Italian Kitchen)
